Planning and developing and organising MaT projects in formal design programmes require considerable attention to detail. Quite apart from the issues canvassed in Section 2.5, there are matters relating to where and when MaT project testing is to be administered. In addition, design teams must have sufficient opportunities for prototype field-testing. Competitions involving head-to-head contests need appropriate space with their constraints and limitations taken into consideration in the specifications. Where MaT devices are to be tested out of doors, weather conditions can seriously influence performance. Probably the most important element of MaT project planning is to permit sufficient creative freedom in the specification to capture the imagination of participants and to promote engagement with the problem. As well, MaT projects tend to require with substantial earlymentoring. Consequently, design teams should be given ample opportunity for interacting with designated mentors.
