Chapter 9: Building Web Parts

We have introduced you to the various components that make up the SPS dashboard site, including the default Web Parts, but we have not really shown you how to create your own Web Parts. This chapter shows how to create Web Parts using the SPS customization pages, Office XP Developer, and Microsoft Office XP products, such as Microsoft Word 2002. In addition, we will look at some guidelines for developing Web Parts, and show you how to leverage the Digital Dashboard Services Component to create more complex Web Parts.

9.1 Development tools for building Web Parts

In Chapter 8, we briefly visited the SPS customization pages from which you can import, export, and add Web Parts to, or remove them from, your dashboards. In this section, we revisit the customization pages and show you how to create a Web Part from scratch. If you find the SPS customization pages too restrictive for coding Web Parts, you will be happy with the SPS integration with the Microsoft Office XP products. This section illustrates how easy it is to create Web Parts using Office XP and introduces you to the Microsoft Development Environment.
