Web Services and Service-Oriented Architecture: The Savvy Manager's Guide

In Part III, the focus shifts to the creation of service-oriented architectures. Referencing the stages of adoption for Web Services and service-oriented architectures, Chapter 10 illustrates possible architectures for each stage. In addition to technical issues, staffing and change issues are covered for each stage as well. Several basic architectural options for service-oriented architectures are introduced in Chapter 11. Using a middle-tier architecture is one of the options covered. Middle-tier in-memory caching options along with the issues surrounding a middle-tier application cache are reviewed in Chapter 12. This chapter also considers the advantages of middle-tier persistence options. Finally, in Chapter 13, C. R. s business trip from Chapter 1 is revisited with the details about the Web Services and service-oriented architectures used in the story, as well as some of the architectural options used.
Before jumping into these architectures, note that they will work with either Java application servers or .NET. You will not see any references to either environment, and the generic application server will be used instead.
This chapter illustrates possible architectures to consider at each stage of adoption for Web Services and service-oriented architectures. In addition to technical issues, staffing and change issues are covered for each stage of adoption. The stages of adoption used in this chapter were first introduced in Chapter 7.
