Part Overview

Part IV provides a path to business modeling and data mining in the form of a detailed, step-by-step methodology. Chapter 14 provides a short introduction to the methodologies, which is available in printed form in this part of the book, and is also available for download from the authors Web site www.modelandmine.com.

Overview

Throughout the book, the narrative explanation has implied that all of the components should be able to be tied together into a methodology a step-by-step series of instructions for what to do next depending on what has happened so far. Part IV of the book puts together just such a methodology. It's called "Catalyst" something that does not itself change, and is not used up, but actively participates in enabling the process of change. This methodology, or more strictly these two methodologies, for there are two of them, should act as a catalyst for the modeler and miner.

One of the two methodologies corresponds to Part II of the book, and the other to Part III. The methodology that corresponds to Part II concerning modeling is referred to as "MII"; the other that corresponds to Part III concerning mining is referred to as "MIII." As far as possible, the form and format of the two methodologies is similar.

The structure of MII is illustrated in Figure 14.1. The top of the figure shows the starting point for a modeler one of five initial situations:
