Chapter 10: Publishing Services to the Internet

Introduction

In this chapter, we ll move our attention to making services on the internal network available to external network users. Typically, these external network users will be on the Internet.

The process of making services on the internal network available to external network users is known as publishing. When you publish content on the private network, ISA Server handles all inbound requests from external clients, and forwards those requests to the appropriate server on the internal network.

Publishing services on the internal network allows you to maintain publicly available services on the internal network in a safe manner, because external users never directly connect to machines on the internal network. All requests are mediated by the ISA server, and only requests that you have configured to allow to be forwarded are sent to the published servers. The ISA server drops all other requests for internal network resources.

Types of Publishing

When we talk about publishing resources, we refer to making resources located on a private network, using private network IDs, available to users on an external network. The process of publishing services involves the use of wizards built into ISA Server to complete the publishing process.

The are three methods of publishing services:

  • Web publishing

  • Server publishing

  • DMZ server publishing
