Getting Started with OpenVMS System Management

Chapter 5: Queues

Overview

OpenVMS has the capability to:

  • Support both printer queues and batch execution queues.

  • Display, modify, delete, requeue, or hold queue entries.

  • Start, stop, and display queues.

  • Automatically fail-over a single queue manager to an alternate cluster node.

  • Automatically convert various file formats to PostScript for PostScript printers.

  • Support generic queues, which will automatically redirect print jobs to the first available printer in a printer farm.

  • Support print devices, which are attached directly to the computer, connected to PCs, connected to a printer (or terminal) server, or connected directly on a LAN.

Queue management is one of the most difficult aspects of OpenVMS, partly because there are so many options (thus many commands) and because there are often many queues and multiple printers on each queue. The functions and examples in this chapter only scratch the surface of the possibilities. In addition to command-line control, a PC-hosted GUI is available, called the OpenVMS Management Station. [1] Two kinds of queues are supported by OpenVMS: batch and print.

[1]This GUI also supports account management and disk management.

Queue Manager

The queue manager is normally started at boot time, in SYSTARTUP_VMS. It is a clusterwide process that performs all queue management functions for all users logged into the cluster. It operates from a three-file database that records queue characteristics and job information. The files are all in SYS$SYSTEM and called QMAN$MASTER.DAT, SYS$QUEUE_MANAGER.QMAN$JOURNAL, and SYS$QUEUE_MANAGER.QMAN$QUEUES. This database may be assigned to any disk mounted clusterwide through the use of logical definitions.
