TABLE OF CONTENTS The remainder of this chapter provides the detailed Lean Extended Enterprise Assessment Process. This performance measurement tool is based on the Lean Extended Enterprise Reference Model (LEERM) presented in Chapter 2 and in particular the Best Practices and Principles Panel (Figure 8.2).
As we mentioned earlier, this panel includes the underpinning best-in-class practices and principles of lean applied across the total value stream. Within each of the 7 categories are 6 specific criteria (42 criteria total) which serve as the underpinning practices and principles of value stream excellence. It is an expansion of the traditional notion of lean into distinct criteria covering the entire breadth and scope of the total value stream.
The performance measurement criteria for the Lean Extended Enterprise are based on the balanced scorecard methodology. As we developed the LEERM, we saw a need to develop a framework for measuring this new reference model. The performance measurement framework for the LEERM incorporates the balanced scorecard concepts of customer, finance, internal business process, and learning/growth. However, we discovered the need to clarify the methodology as it impacts the total value stream. Appropriately, we decided to name this methodology the Lean Extended Enterprise Assessment Process, or LEEAP. The acronyms are simple: LEERM is the entire reference model, and LEEAP is the performance measurement assessment process.
