Main Toolbar

Figure D.1 illustrates the main toolbar that appears when you boot the enclosed Live CD. The first five functions are outlined to help get you started.

This icon launches the Main Menu, giving you access to all of the features and applications on the Live CD.

This icon launches a bash terminal. From this shell, you can launch applications and obtain or set other system information.

This icon launches the Risc OS on x (ROX) filer, an explorer-style file navigator and manager.

This icon launches the Firefox Web browser, which is used to view the portal sites listed in this appendix.

This icon launches the XFLD-Welcome application, which provides shortcuts to the main features of the Live CD. This is a great place to start exploring the CD examples.

Note

There are four main applications that must be running on the Live CD in order for the examples to be available. They should start automatically at boot time; however, you might need to start them manually. These applications are:

  • Apache Web Server

  • Webmin Administration Server

  • MySQL Database Server

  • Nagios Monitoring Server

    Tip

    To start these applications, select the terminal icon to launch a bash shell. You must have administrative privileges (root rights) to perform the following tasks. You can switch user to root, as illustrated in the

  • su root
