Overview
New access technologies are changing the traditional means of access to telecommunications services. Not only do established operators have a wider range of technological options and potential suppliers, but new technologies and interfaces allow new operators to enter the markets as permitted by the regulatory authorities. This competition may also stimulate new services that can be supported by the new technologies. A dynamic evolution of access networks is promised with great benefits to the industry and its customers. This book describes the technologies and interfaces that are fueling these changes.
1.1 Background
Access networks are the increasingly complex multiplexing and transmission systems that are being deployed between telecommunications users and the exchange switches of the core telecommunications network to which they are connected. They are a recent innovation, and most customers are still connected to their exchanges over passive copper pairs. The first steps towards access networks were taken with the introduction of remote multiplexers and pair gain systems. The trend towards more complex systems reached a critical point with the introduction of radio and optical-fiber technologies, which require even more sophisticated transmission systems.
The most important decision seems to have been made almost by accident. This was the decision to interface access networks to their host exchanges, rather than integrate them into these exchanges. Part of the reason for this was that many of the initial developments in optical access networks took place in the United Kingdom, where an open...
