Career Success in Engineering: A Guide for Students and New Professionals

This chapter will introduce you to a variety of project delivery systems. A project delivery system is the organizational structure of the various participants who will fulfill certain roles on a project and have certain obligations toward bringing an owner's goals and objectives to a fruitful conclusion. Before we discuss various project delivery systems, let's give some definition to the various participants who make up a team.
Owner. The person, persons, or entity that sets the goals and objectives for a construction project and who will supply the financial resources to accomplish it
Contractor. The person, persons, or entity obligated to furnish labor, equipment, materials, and all else necessary to construct a project in accordance with the contract documents (plans, specifications, construction contract, and applicable law)
Design professional. A person or entity legally authorized to practice as an architect, engineer, land surveyor, or landscape architect in the state where a project is to be constructed. In the context of this chapter, the design professional will likely be an engineer or engineering company. The scope of service furnished by the design professional may include predesign studies, preparation of conceptual or planning documents and/or studies, development of plans and specifications for the construction of a project, preparation of opinions of probable construction cost, bid documents, contract documents, and so forth.
