Wireless Office Telephone System (WOTS)

A wireless office telephone system (WOTS) is used in a business environment to provide features similar to a private branch exchange (PBX) for handheld or wireless desktop telephones. WOTS systems are also called wireless private branch exchange (WPBX) systems. They can be completely independent systems or they can be integrated with standard (wired) PBX systems. These systems have three basic parts: wireless telephones, radio base stations and a switching system.

WOTS are typically used to provide communication to office personnel and production workers who are highly mobile. These people are frequently away from their desk or other fixed telephone station locations. This group commonly involves such people as shop floor supervisors, technicians, retail salespeople and shipping managers. Wireless office systems permit workers to accomplish their mobile jobs and effectively communicate at the same time. Studies indicate that 10% to 15% of the personnel in a typical industrial or manufacturing location fall into this highly mobile category [ ^[1]].
