Introduction to Mobile Communications Engineering

Chapter 11: Other Mobile Radio Systems

11.1 Introduction

This chapter presents a miscellany of mobile radio communication systems ofparticular interest due both to their field of application and their degree ofdevelopment. The second-generation digital cellular telephone system used inthe United States and Latin America, known as NADC (IS-54), is described. The modern cellular spread spectrum CDMA system (IS-95) is also studied. This standard is used both in the United States, Latin America, and Asia andmay be considered as a bridge between second- and third-generation cellularsystems. Also, the modern European digital PAMR and cordless systemsTETRA and DECT are presented in this chapter.

11.2 The North Arnerican Cellular Digital System (NADC)

11.2.1 Overview

AMPS, which is a first-generation analog standard, has been used in the UnitedStates for cellular mobile telephony from the early 1980s. This system providesroaming capabilities between the various operators both in the United Statesand its neighboring countries, Canada and Mexico.

The FCC allocated a bandwidth of 40 MHz for mobile telephone systems. The specific frequency bands are 825 845 MHz (uplink) and 870 890 MHz(downlink). These bands are subdivided into two, called A and B, to be assignedto the wireline operator and to a non-wireline operator in each market in theUnited States. The channel spacing is 30 kHz, and channels are numberedfrom 1 to 666. The duplex separation is 45 MHz. The following frequenciescorrespond to the generic channel, n, for the uplink and downlink:

  • f u ( n) MHz = 825 + 0,03 n (uplink)
  • f d ( n) MHz = f u
