Generating Hourglass Worm for Space Sextant Drive - Overall accuracy - 5 arc-Seconds

BUCKINGHAM ASSOCIATES INC. consults in the design, application, and manufacture of gears for any type of drive. Consultation can be either in the customer's plant, or in our offices in Springfield, Vermont.

We are prepared to design complete gear boxes, and, by utilizing local machine shops, manufacture prototypes. We also occasionally test gear sets of 1 HP or lower capacity.

BUCKINGHAM ASSOCIATES INC. owns a roll test machine for evaluating the surface endurance limits of materials for gears, linkages, and cams, as described in an article in Machine Design August 1, 1968 by Ralph Morrison of the United Shoe Machinery Co., and in Chapter 4 of The Handbook of Mechanical Wear, Lipson and Colwell, University of Michigan Press.

We have had substantial experience determining the cause of failures of gears and gear drives, reducing noise, and increasing the effectiveness of existing systems. We are also prepared to work with customers over extended periods, assisting with training their personnel in both engineering and manufacturing.

The following is a partial list of some of the products on which we have consulted:

Worms and Worm Gears

Worms and worm gears are gear sets that offer high gear reduction and torque multiplication with a small footprint. A worm drive is a cylindrical gear with a shallow spiral thread that engages the worm gear in a non-intersecting, perpendicular axes configuration.

Hypoid Gears

A hypoid gear is a style of spiral bevel gear whose main variance is that the mating gears' axes do not intersect. The hypoid gear is offset from the gear center, allowing unique configurations and a large diameter shaft. The teeth on a hypoid gear are helical, and the pitch surface is best described as a hyperboloid. A hypoid gear can be considered a cross between a bevel gear and a worm drive.

Gears

Gears are rotating mechanical devices employing 'teeth' in order to transmit torque between separate axes. Two or more cooperating gears are called a transmission and can produce a mechanical advantage by changing speed, torque or rotation direction.

Gear Manufacturing Services
Gear manufacturing services design and fabricate gears to customer specifications.
Helical Gears
Helical gears are cylindrilical gears whose teeth are not parallel to the axis of rotation. The teeth are angled and appear as a segment of a helix. Helical gears can transmit power between parallel or right angle axes.
