ac Alternating, electrical current

A Area in square inches

? (beta) Ratio of diameters for an orifice-type flow meter or angle in centrifugal pump vector diagram

bhp ( P p) Brake horsepower required by a pump

bhp-hr Energy consumed by a pump operating at 1 bhp for 1 hour

BTU British Thermal Unit (Energy equal to 778.2 foot-pounds or the amount of heat required to raise 1 lb of water 1 F at 60 F)

Binary Any process with two possible conditions, i.e., a digital output or a two-position switch

C (1) Hazen-Williams constant or (2) temperature ( C)

CPVC Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride pipe

cfs Flow in ft 3/sec

CAD Computer-aided design

cp Centipoise, a measure of absolute viscosity

c p Specific heat of water at constant pressure

cu Cubic, as in cubic foot

? (gamma) Specific weight of water in lb/ft 3

D Inside diameter of pipe in inches
