Chapter 11: Voice Over Internet Protocol

VoIP Generally Speaking

According to IPAXS Corporation, Since the enactment of the 1996 Telecom Act, the landscape of the telecommunications service providers has forever changed and is continuing to evolve with the increased prominence of the Internet at the heart of it. 1 Most people not only freely exchange their phone number for business transactions and as contacts, but also their e-mail address. Some even require that you e-mail them before calling, compounding the likelihood of being overheard.

The transmission of voice packets across an Internet protocol is known as voice over IP or (VoIP). VoIP could change the way we communicate on the Web, as well as the way we do business. If implemented successfully, it holds out the promise of unified communications. It might well provide a low cost solution for the building and transmission of networks, and allow a number of applications to be accessible through the same media for transmission.2 In a world where people are starting to use the Internet and cellular phones by preference to communicate, it is not surprising that the merging of the two is pushing to the forefront of technology.

VoIP technology enables computer users to establish voice conversations through the computer via connection to the Internet. Although clearly the Internet Protocol was designed to be most effective with data transmissions, voice applications are now viable and even practical because implementations of the IP architecture are already virtually ubiquitous in networks and communication systems.
