From the moment AIChE was created in 1908, it helped establish the discipline of chemical engineering - and set the foundation for a constantly evolving and vital profession. At that time, chemical engineering was emerging from its roots in the chemistry industry. But there was little or no professional literature available. With the creation of AIChE, over 500 professionals across the country had a single place to share ideas, grow professionally and establish chemical engineering as a formal discipline.

More than 100 years and 40,000 global members later, AIChE's goals have evolved, but the vision of their 19 founders has remained steady. AIChE is proud of all their accomplishments - past, present and future. The Institute established accreditation standards for chemical engineering programs and continues setting guidelines for government agencies, making significant, lasting contributions to society and the world.
