Extensive accident prevention research has shown that, when in pain or distress, operators using foot pedals tend to shift their weight forward and step down harder on the foot pedal that is enabling equipment operation rather than remove their foot. Safety foot switches are designed to overcome this problem using 3 stage operations - the switch enables machine operation when the foot pedal is depressed to a mid-point, but will stop machinery when released or when fully depressed.
