Standard BAB models are available as direct replacements for common single-lamp and single-rod configurations. In addition to standard geometries, custom reflector cavities can be engineered to accommodate specific cavity lengths, lamp-rod center distances, mounting features, and selective glazing requirements.

The porous ceramic body provides broad diffuse reflection and high electrical insulation around the optical pumping chamber. Depending on coolant exposure, fluid pressure, and optical cleanliness requirements, reflectors can be supplied unglazed, fully glazed, or selectively glazed.

Features:

  • High-purity porous alumina ceramic (approx. 99% Al2O3)
  • High diffuse reflectance: 97.8% at 1000 nm, and >96% across 500–2000 nm
  • Uniform light scattering prevents localized rod hot-spots and thermal lensing
  • Superior electrical insulation against high-voltage flash-lamp arcing
  • Excellent resistance to chemical attack and thermal shock under intensive water cooling
  • Available in standard BAB models as well as custom cavity geometries
  • Flexible surface glazing options: unglazed, glazed, or selectively glazed

Ceramic Reflectors in Lamp-Pumped Laser Cavities

In a lamp-pumped solid-state laser, the pump cavity plays a decisive role in redirecting radiation from the flash lamp toward the laser rod. Pumping efficiency depends not only on intrinsic material reflectivity, but also on lamp-to-rod spacing, cavity cross-section, hole dimensions, and the cooling manifold configuration.

Porous alumina is the optimal material choice for flash-lamp pump chambers because its micro-porous structure acts as a true volumetric Lambertian diffuser rather than a specular mirror. This ensures balanced photon absorption across the entire cross-section of the gain medium, maximizing optical slope efficiency and extending laser crystal service life.

Surface Options Unglazed / Glazed / Selectively glazed

Glazed vs. Unglazed Options

Surface glaze selection must match the chemical, fluid, and optical environment of your pump head:

  • Unglazed: Ideal for dry cavities or applications where direct, exposed micro-porous diffuse reflection is required.
  • Fully Glazed: Creates a smooth, impervious protective layer that seals surface pores, facilitates easy cleaning, and completely prevents cooling water absorption or contamination.
  • Selectively Glazed: Protects coolant-exposed outer surfaces and mounting interfaces against fluid ingress while keeping the internal reflector walls unglazed for maximum diffuse light scattering.

Applications:

  • Nd:YAG Lasers: Pump chambers for industrial laser cutting, welding, drilling, and marking machines.
  • Medical Lasers: Alexandrite, ruby, and Nd:YAG solid-state laser heads for dermatology, aesthetic, and surgical procedures.
  • High-Intensity Lamp Housings: Homogeneous diffuse reflectors for intense arc and pulsed light sources.
  • Research & Laboratory Systems: Custom prototype pump cavities for advanced laser physics experiments.
