Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Varistors
Description
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Varistors are electronic components designed to protect circuits from overvoltage conditions. They function as voltage-dependent resistors, where their resistance decreases as the voltage increases, forming a low-resistance path to shunt excess voltage away from sensitive components.
Working Principle
SMT Varistors operate by utilizing a ceramic-based structure that changes resistance in response to voltage levels. When the voltage across the varistor exceeds a certain threshold, its resistance drops significantly, allowing it to conduct current and divert the excess voltage away from the protected circuit. This mechanism is crucial for safeguarding electronic devices from voltage spikes caused by events such as lightning, inductive load switching, and electrostatic discharge (ESD). Applications

Advantages over other Varistors
Compared to other varistor types, SMT Varistors offer several advantages.
