Fiber Optic Feedthroughs
Last Updated: April 1, 2025
Description
Fiber optic feedthroughs are specialized components designed to transfer light into a sealed environment. They utilize high technology glass-to-metal bonding techniques to ensure a reliable and leak-free interface. These feedthroughs are equipped with standard ST connectors on both sides and are constructed without moving parts or loose optical cables, making them a robust and standalone solution for optical connections.
Working Principle
Fiber optic feedthroughs operate by using metal-coated optical fibers that are brazed to a stainless steel tube, creating a vacuum-tight seal. This assembly is then connected to an SMA connector on the vacuum side. The feedthroughs are available in various core diameters and transmission ranges, including UV and IR. The use of metal-coated fibers ensures high electrical resistance and immunity to electromagnetic fields, making them particularly useful in environments where such interference is a concern.
Applications
Fiber optic feedthroughs are commonly used in environments where maintaining a sealed atmosphere is crucial, such as in vacuum systems or high-pressure environments. They are particularly useful in scientific research facilities, such as particle accelerators or space research labs, where precise optical measurements are required without compromising the sealed environment.
Advantages over other Feedthroughs
Fiber optic feedthroughs offer several advantages over traditional mechanical feedthroughs. They overcome the disadvantages associated with unreliable epoxy bonding by using glass-to-metal bonding techniques. This results in a more durable and reliable connection. Additionally, their high electrical resistance and immunity to electromagnetic fields make them superior in environments where such factors are a concern.
Limitations
One limitation of fiber optic feedthroughs is their dependency on precise manufacturing techniques, which can make them more expensive than other types of feedthroughs. Additionally, while they are highly resistant to electromagnetic interference, they may not be suitable for all types of optical applications, particularly those requiring very high power transmission.
Considerations
When considering fiber optic feedthroughs, it is important to evaluate the initial costs, which can be higher due to the advanced manufacturing processes involved. However, their durability and low maintenance requirements can offset these initial expenses over time. Operating expenses are generally low, as they do not require frequent replacement or maintenance. Accuracy is another consideration, as fiber optic feedthroughs provide precise optical transmission, which is critical in many high-tech applications.
