Overview

This chapter aims to increase awareness of those involved in the management of design as part of the hospitality development process. The structure is as follows:

  • Project brief

  • Project requirements

  • Professional team appointments

  • Duties and services

  • Statutory approvals

  • Design development

  • Procurement

  • Construction

  • Handover and occupation

  • Conclusion.

Once the client brief has been articulated and the project requirements appraised, then a team of specialists is usually appointed to advise the client and deliver a set of specific services to assist the client to realize the project objectives. Generally, such special- ists will consist of, but not be limited to, an architect, structural and building services engineers, a cost consultant, interior designer and construction management group. All these individuals or their respective companies will be required to be suitably qualified and registered with appropriate professional institutions or industry associations. Most such bodies will publish a minimum standard of professional practice, and their members have to comply with, and subscribe to, a standard list of duties and services as well as information on indicative fee values.

This collective group of specialists is then contracted by the client to carry out the design development for the project as well as be responsible for the delivery of the physical product. The steps in the process of design to post-occupation appraisal are described in Figure 7.1.
