Tru64 UNIX System Administrator's Guide

Tru64 UNIX supports a number of direct-access removable media type devices, which share some characteristics with both the fixed disk and tape types we've been discussing until now. The removable media devices are generally used in a block-oriented fashion, but have a media that is designed to be removed from the drive and taken to another system like a tape device. Tape devices are read and written in a character-oriented manner; thus, they are not random access in nature. The removable devices discussed in this section are designed to provide random access to their data.
The most popular of these type devices on a Tru64 UNIX systems are CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and floppies, and it is these to which we will confine our discussion. Even though these are the most popular, they are far from the only ones that can be used. There are other types of read-write and read-only optical devices that can be used, as well as third-party devices like the Zi drive from Iomega.
