Limit Analysis & Soil Plasticity

6.2: LIMIT ANALYSIS, SLIPLINE AND LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM METHODS

6.2 LIMIT ANALYSIS, SLIPLINE AND LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM METHODS

Studies of the bearing capacity of foundations under conditions of plane strain have been made by Terzaghi (1943), by Meyerhof (1951) using limit equilibrium method, by Sokolovskii (1965), by Brinch Hansen (1961) using slipline method, by Shield (1954b), by Chen and Davidson (1973) using limit analysis method, and many others. Some of the information to be presented in this Chapter is contained, therefore, in this previous work but the relevant parts of each have not yet been compared in principle. Although all the analyses utilize the concept of perfect plasticity, the relation between these solutions, corresponding to different analytical methods, involves terminology and special concept that are not in common use in the field of soil mechanics. A brief description of the salient features of these methods relevant to the bearing capacity solutions of footings will therefore be given here. The discussion includes the following three methods: limit analysis, slipline method, and limit equilibrium, A general discussion of the salient features of these methods has already been given in Chapter 1.

6.2.1 Limit Equilibrium Analysis (Fig. 6.1)

The comparison between these methods can best be illustrated by considering the bearing capacity of a surcharged cohesive soil in which the angle of internal friction, ?, is zero. This is illustrated, schematically, in Fig. 6.1(a). It will be assumed that there is no contact between the footing and the surcharge. The limit equilibrium solution takes as its failure mode a rotation of...
