This chapter provides information that will help you to understand the challenges, choose your tools, and then create hybrid discs that work in a variety of players.
There are four basic areas of hybrid convergence that are possible on the DVD disc:
DVD Video and DVD Audio: This form of DVD convergence involves integrating elements that play on a DVD Audio player only with elements that play on a DVD Video player only. Because this format is considered part of the DVD Audio specification, it is discussed in Chapter 9.
DVD-ROM on a DVD Video Player: The format emphasizes DVD Video, with additional DVD-ROM elements thrown in for use on special playback units that support DVD-ROM. This is a futuristic format, requiring new set-top boxes or special PCs designed for the home theater environment that include both a DVD player and a PC desktop environment such as Microsoft Windows.
DVD Video (or DVD Audio) on a PC: One of the first forms of DVD convergence, this involves integrating DVD-ROM and DVD Video (or DVD Audio) technologies. Elements of a DVD Video title, for example, might be combined with PC formats such as Macromedia Director titles or PowerPoint presentations. This category can also include DVD Video titles that simply add additional DVD-ROM files (Word documents, JPG images, and so forth) that can be opened on a PC.
