So far this book has considered the technology for bringing broadband into and around the home but what use will be made of this enhanced method of communication? Before looking at the application technology (which follows in the next part), user needs have to be considered. Perhaps the simplest way of finding this out is to go and ask unfortunately this is not easy for new technology. Asking people how they would use technology and products they have never experienced can give misleading results. Equally important is gaining an understanding of not only what people do in their homes but also how they behave there. Social, economic and cultural trends are important the home today is not static.
In this third part, the four chapters discuss the usage of new telecommunications technologies, drawing conclusions about the implications for future communications applications in the home.
