SUMMARY

The use of synchrotron radiation opened up new areas of nuclear resonant scattering studies. It permitted the measurement of the element-specific dynamics, on which it is extremely difficult to obtain information by the use of conventional radioactive sources. Recent progress of studies using nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation is reviewed in this chapter.

1. ISOMERIC M SSBAUER EXCITATION BY SYNCHROTRON [1] RADIATION

Synchrotron radiation has many distinct properties, such as high brilliance, energy tunability and pulse structure. On account of these properties it permits new types of nuclear resonant excitation experiments. A straightforward use of synchrotron radiation is as an alternative excitation source, which is particularly important in the case of parentless M ssbauer nuclides. The use of synchrotron radiation as a M ssbauer source was proposed by Ruby (1974). The first trial to observe nuclear resonant excitation with synchrotron radiation was reported by Cohen et al. (1978). After these pioneering experiments, nuclear Bragg scattering of synchrotron radiation by 57Fe in a single crystal was clearly observed by Gerdau et al. (1985). In 1991, nuclear resonant forward scattering by 57Fe in iron foil was observed (Hastings et al. 1991). This experiment showed that it is meaningful to examine polycrystalline samples by this method, and led to the extension of traditional M ssbauer spectroscopy. However, unlike traditional M ssbauer spectroscopy that is based on recoilless nuclear resonance absorption, the use of synchrotron radiation enables to gain information also...
