How to Cheat at Designing a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure

Chapter 7: Service Sizing and Placement

Solutions in this Chapter:

  • Design an Active Directory implementation plan.

  • Design the placement of domain controllers and Global Catalog servers.

  • Plan the placement of Flexible Operations Master roles.

  • Select the domain controller creation process.

  • Specify the server specifications to meet system requirements.

Introduction

Now that we've decided what type of infrastructure is required, we need to decide where to place the associated services so we can provide the optimum service to the end users and applications. In conjunction with this task, we also need to decide how to size the servers that provide these services, so that they can cope with both the demands of today and the increased demands of tomorrow. The first phase when planning the placement of services is to assess the service levels that need to be adhered to. These might already be available from existing infrastructure deployments, but it is likely that they will need to be amended or tailored to meet the new demands of an Active Directory Services and Network infrastructure. For example, the organization might stipulate that a user must be authenticated within a set time period after supplying credentials. We also discuss how service placement should be determined by various factors such as user populations, nearest hub site, available bandwidth, and so on. Based on these factors, locations can be banded and assigned the appropriate types and quantities of services as deemed necessary.

Any large project that involves the deployment of infrastructure to many disparate locations needs a well thought-out and...
