Overview
This appendix is provided for the purpose of supplying key supplemental information and documentation. Most of the information supports key concepts or material contained in the text, particularly in Chapters 4 and 5, concerning disaster recovery. Much of the information is provided as a template for your actual disaster recovery procedures for Exchange 2000. As always, you should evaluate your own needs based on the specifics of your Exchange deployment and the service-level agreements you have in place with your customers. The procedures provided in this appendix should be thoroughly tested in a nonproduction environment and accessed for applicability within your own deployment. These procedures are an accumulation of information obtained from a variety of sources, including Microsoft Product Support Services and Compaq Global Services.
A.1 Recovery Procedures Exchange 2000 Server
A.1.1 Single Mailbox Recovery
Exchange consolidates the contents of mailboxes into a small number of database files. This design provides excellent performance and operating efficiency, but means that in order to recover data from a single mailbox, you must restore an entire database. You do not have to take down your live Exchange system in order to recover mailbox data. Exchange allows you to bring up Information Store databases from one server on a different server. In Exchange 5.5, a recovery server was usually installed with the same logical organization and site naming as the live server, but was not joined to the live site.
