Our next component architecture is for network management. Proper network management is critical to the success of any network, and as you will see, there are many factors to consider in providing network management.
In this chapter, you will learn about network management and the network management architecture. We will discuss the various functions of network management and the mechanisms used to achieve these functions. We will discuss and compare a number of variations for the network management architecture, as well as the internal and external relationships for network management.
To be able to understand and apply the concepts in this chapter, you should be familiar with network management protocols (Simple Network Management Protocol [SNMP] and optionally Common Management Information Protocol [CMIP]/CMIP over TCP/IP [CMOT]), the utilities ping, traceroute, and TCPdump, management information base (MIB) structures and parameters, and operations support system (OSS) functions.
