Jason's quest to return with the Golden Fleece was clear enough in its intent, less clear to him were the challenges and obstacles he would face on his journey. The strength of his vessel served him well. It had to withstand the rough seas and the Clashing Rocks that threatened to crush the Argo. It was also the courage and skills of his Argonauts that contributed to his success.
The transition manager needs to be equally well equipped and prepared. The preparation for a successful transition needs to be done in these early days prior to the transition launch. This critical transition planning period is outlined in Figure 5.1.
The transition manager's involvement in the earlier due diligence phase will help to provide the essential continuity between the due diligence phase and transition planning. In particular, the plan must reflect:
The original purpose, intentions and success criteria for the acquisition as defined in the strategic plan
The findings of the due diligence report in terms of areas of identified synergy or misalignment
The opening balance sheet and operating plan for the acquired company
The key staff retention plan that identifies who the key staff are and mechanisms...
