Glossary
AAL (ATM adaptation layer). A protocol layer that allows higher layer protocols to run over ATM virtual circuits. Of particular relevance is AAL5, which enables segmentation and reassembly of variable-length packets so that they may be sent as streams of cells on an ATM VC.
ARIS (Aggregate Route-based IP Switching). The name given to the label switching scheme invented at IBM, which associates labels with aggregate routes (e.g., address prefixes) in the common case. Also used as the name for the associated label binding distribution protocol.
ATMARP (Asynchronous Transfer Mode Address Resolution Protocol). The server-based protocol that enables IP addresses to be translated into ATM addresses.
BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). The predominant interdomain routing protocol used in IP networks.
BOF (Birds of a Feather). The name for a session at the IETF that is held prior to the formation of a working group to determine whether sufficient interest exists.
BUS (Broadcast and Unknown Server). A server used in emulated LANs to provide broadcast service on a network such as ATM that does not natively support it.
CSR (Cell Switching Router). The name for a device implementing Toshiba?s label switching scheme.
Edge LSR. A Label Switching Router (LSR) that first applies a label to a packet.
Egress identifier. A concept used in ARIS, originally referring to the identifier of the last LSR in a label switched path. It has become more of a catchall term for the identifier of an FEC.
