Introduction to Organizational Issues
Chapters 1 through 17 describe the tasks in the Usability Engineering Lifecycle that should be applied in some tailored way to specific product development projects. In this and the next three chapters, I discuss other related issues that are more managerial in nature and a bit wider in scope than a single development project. These issues include
? Promoting and implementing the Usability Engineering Lifecycle (this chapter)
? Usability project planning (Chapter 19 )
? Cost-benefit analysis (Chapter 20 )
? Organizational roles and structures (Chapter 21 )
An understanding of these four issues helps ensure the success of implementing the Usability Engineering Lifecycle approach within any particular development project and of ultimately institutionalizing it within a development organization and methodology.
Before turning to a discussion of promoting and implementing the Usability Engineering Lifecycle, let's briefly summarize Chapters 1?17. The Usability Engineering Lifecycle consists of three basic phases: Requirements Analyses, Design/Testing/Development, and Installation. Specific Usability Engineering tasks within each of these phases work interdependently with one another and with traditional software engineering tasks, to contribute to the development of products that are tailored to and usable by their intended users.
