Instead of describing ways to create and enjoy big beautiful WM9 movies on your home theater or desktop PC, we'll now look at how to optimize these activities for small-screen Pocket PC devices, such as the HP iPaq, Dell Axim, and Toshiba e Series. If you don't use a handheld device specifically one that runs Pocket PC 2002 or later you can skip this chapter altogether.
In the Pocket PC world, making Windows Media movies is just as important as understanding the OS, player, and hardware environments in which yourself and others will try to play those movies. Questions like, Is there enough Flash RAM on my device? How good is WiFi video streaming on a handheld? What type of removable storage is best for transferring files? are common. (SD, CF, Sony Memory Stick, Microdrive, etc., are common removable storage solutions.) I try to elaborate on these issues, if not solve them, at the end of this chapter.
First some background: Before Pocket PC, there was Windows CE, which went through several versions before strengthening its code base, cleaning up its UI, and changing its public name to Pocket PC 2000. Prior versions of Windows Media appeared on those tiny desktops, but now have so little in common with the current OS that they're hardly worth mentioning.
