A

Abbreviation
A dictionary entry that introduces a shorthand for a concept that can already be described using words from the same dictionary.

Absolute cardinality property
The absolute cardinality of an entity type is a set of natural numbers that indicates how many instances of the type can exist at the same time.
Abstraction
Omission of detail from a description. The opposite of Refinement.
Action
Each event is an action when viewed from the initiator of the event.
Activity chart
Statemate alternative for data flow diagrams.
Activity diagram
UML notation to represent flow of control. We use activity diagrams to represent workflow.
Activity state
A statechart or activity diagram state in which the described behavior is performing an ongoing activity. Every superstate is an activity state.

Actor
An entity in the environment that can cause actions in the environment when so triggered by the output response of the system.
Actuator
An actor device.
Allocation table
A table that shows which SuD components play a role in the provision of a SuD service.
And-component
Collection of closely coupled components that broadcast information to one another. Each closely coupled component has access to the same communication channels as the other components.
And-state
Statechart concept. State of a behavior that has substates. If the behavior is in an and-state, it is in all of its children states simultaneously.
