Digital UNIX System Administrator's Guide

Once the pre-installation planning has been completed, the next step prior to actually beginning the installation is ensuring that the system itself is suitably prepared. This means surveying the system to see that its configuration is compatible with a Digital UNIX installation. This is especially important for older systems, which may need to be updated to support the version of Digital UNIX being installed. The following are the system prerequisites of a Digital UNIX system installation:
Any existing data is backed up
Installation media is available
A system console is in place
A suitable boot disk is available
The system's firmware is at the required version
If the installation is to be onto a Digital system currently running an instance of either Digital UNIX or another operating system such as OpenVMS or Windows NT, take the time to back up any important data before proceeding to install Digital UNIX. This is not so much a requirement as a recommendation. Even if the system was being backed up regularly, make two copies of data deemed important and ideally make two full backups. This step is inexpensive insurance and could save you or your organization a great deal of pain.
