2.4 UPGRADING DIGITAL UNIX

The process of upgrading an existing installed version of Digital UNIX to a later version of Digital UNIX is an Update installation. An Update installation is performed on an existing system and results in an upgraded system while preserving disk and file system configuration, user accounts, printer and network configurations, and any other custom configurations that existed prior to the upgrade. An Update installation is similar to a Full installation in two important ways:

  • Many of the pre-installation tasks are the same. These include backing up the system prior to beginning, updating the system firmware if necessary, and planning disk space.

  • Updates can be done from CD-ROM or across the network from a Remote Installation Services (RIS) server

The Update installation process is different from a Full installation primarily in the way the update is begun. While a Full installation is started from the console prompt (>>>), an Update installation is begun while the system is running and in single-user mode.

In addition, Digital has provided only certain update paths. For instance, to upgrade to version 4.0D of Digital UNIX, the system must already be at version 4.0A, 4.0B, or 4.0C. Unfortunately some system upgrades may take two or more updates to get the system to the desired target version. As an example, consider a Digital UNIX version 3.2G system. In order to upgrade this system to V4.0D, the supported path is:

  1. Update from version 3.2G to version 4.0A, followed by an:

  2. Update from version 4.0A...
