Enterprise Planning and Development: Small Business Start-up, Survival and Development

In the second part of this book, Chapters 13 to 21 are concerned with the post start-up stage. Once break-even level trading has been achieved, most enter a phase of consolidation in which they focus on improving the efficiency and profitability of the business operations. For many this second stage will be brief before they embark on further expansion of the business. For others this stage will last much longer as they opt for gradual and steady growth, or where they have to use the profits of the business to fund future growth. In some other cases, notable with self-employed individuals and what we call lifestyle businesses, they choose never to go beyond this second stage.
Some business owners find it hard to break out of the second stage, having become too focused on operational aspects of managing the business. Part II of this book is therefore about making the transition from operational to strategic thinking, and about the development of the necessary skills and knowledge that will facilitate the subsequent long-term growth and sustainability of the business.
