6.1 PSpice Simulation

The performance of Magnetic Flux Compression Generators (MFCG or just FCG) and the performance of the systems of which they are a part of can be modeled using electrical circuit simulators from the SPICE family. SPICE stands for Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis [Tui88]. This predecessor of all modern Spice flavors was developed in the 1970's at the University of California at Berkeley to assist in the design of the first analog integrated circuits that were emerging in this era. Since then, SPICE has been developed into an universal electric circuit simulator, refined and commercialized. For the ongoing discussions, we will concentrate on the PSpice code currently sold by Cadence, Inc. (http://www.cadence.com), using the "Schematics" graphical circuit editor. It shall be noted, that the models described below are easily portable to other current SPICE versions.

The initial discussion will describe a basic model of a magnetic flux compression generator and present results from simulations and theoretical considerations. Later, power conditioning components will be added in the circuits as well as refinements to the FCG model to account for experimentally verified non-ideal behavior.

6.1.1 Theoretical Background

A magnetic flux compression generator is an electro-mechanical energy conversion device. It converts an (explosively driven) mechanical expansion of a cylinder into electrical energy. This form of energy conversion is also the basic principle of the operation of common electrical machines and always happens...
