Connecting to the web can be hazardous. Even when all precautions are taken firewalls installed and regularly updated, policies created, and application protocols filtered it only takes one user clicking on something hazardous to open the door to mayhem. For now, though, attention must be turned to the outside, to that which lurks just outside, on the doorstep to the Internet. Many organizations have both the technical and the financial resources to host their own web site. Budget aside, there are many points that need to be considered when deciding whether to host a web server on-site. Figure 11.1 demonstrates the difference between a locally hosted web site and one that is co-located and possibly managed by an external service. Budgets have a way of doubling and tripling as unexpected problems arise that must be addressed. What may seem like a small equipment and time investiture can escalate into massive overtime and software and capital expenditures.
