Overview

There are three major standard making bodies, each identified by prefix letters to the standard number:

These three bodies now work closely together with the result that there is a growing number of standards that have been adopted as both European and international standards. These can be identified by double prefix letters, i.e. EN.IEC and EN.ISO. This list is split into three parts corresponding to the particular organization adopting the standard.

The most prolific standard making body is the European (EN) through the Comit Europ en de Normalisation (CEN) and Comit Europ en de Normalisation Electrotechnique (CENELEC). When an EN standard is adopted internationally it is given a five figure number. Where this has occurred, or is occurring, the relevant alternate numbers are given in square brackets [ ] at the end of the title that act as cross references between international standards and the equivalent EN standard.
