System Requirements Analysis

Chapter 3.4: Product and Process Performance Requirements Analysis and Allocation

3.4.1 Preliminaries

It is convenient to group these two kinds of requirements analysis work together (product and process) because they share a common methodology for gaining insight into appropriate requirements. This common methodology is functional flow diagramming. We shall begin by defining each requirements analysis category and then we shall apply the structured analysis approach described in Chapter 3.3 to product performance requirements analysis and to the several components of process performance requirements analysis. In each application we are interested in answering the question, "What does it have to do and how well does it have to do it?"

We have been careful to encourage a practice called concurrent engineering throughout this book, where engineers and analysts from the several different disciplines needed for a particular project, work together to first understand the problem capturing the results in a specification and then work together to solve the problem in design solutions. We might also require that this work be done in a simultaneous fashion to make an important point. We should develop the product and process requirements simultaneously cooperating across this gap intensely. Product requirements will influence the requirements appropriate for the manufacturing process. Similarly, the design of the product will influence the design of the manufacturing process. These facts are true between the product and all of the process components: manufacturing, quality assurance, logistics support, product operations and maintenance, verification, deployment, and disposal. Therefore, we must accomplish the product and process requirements analysis both simultaneously and concurrently and integrate...
