Intelligent Virtual World: Technologies and Applications In Distributed Virtual Environment

This chapter presents an approach to virtual training scenarios for developing virtual training systems. To overcome the difficulty in online instruction knowledge acquisition and verification, we use Petri nets theory as a tool for specifying and verifying varied training plans and corresponding training scenarios whereby the online instruction knowledge is derived. An experimental example, the Virtual Reality based Computerized Numeric Control (CNC) operations training system, shows that Petri nets based training tasks and training scenarios analysis can facilitate creating knowledge base of online training systems.
Virual training systems (VTSs) are for technical training courses that tend to cover skills that trainees need to able to do (Vince, 1998). Incorporating adaptive online instructions into VTSs would improve the efficiency of online training. When a trainee is caught in a dilemma, online instructions are provided to extricate him or her from the dilemma. Therefore, the incorporation of online instruction should be based on the thorough analysis of training scenarios. However, due to the combinational explosion of potential interaction and situations, analyzing training scenarios is non-trivial. This research develops an effective approach to acquire, specify, and verify online instruction knowledge through analyzing online training plans and training...
