5-HT: = 5-Hydroxytryptamine.

Known as serotonin, an important neurotransmitter made by neurons in the central nervous system. After it is released by a neuron, activates receptors located on nearby neurons.
ab initio [= From the beginning (Latin)] calculation (or method): Calculated (formulated) without empiricism or the use of experimental data except for fundamental physical constants such as Boltzmann constant or Planck constants.. Molecular orbital calculations which use all the molecular orbitals in a calculation.
AAD: = Acceptor-Acceptor-Donor
Adamantane: (See diamondoid)
Adatom: Adsorbed atom on a smooth surface
Avidin: A basic glycoprotein of known carbohydrate and amino acid content. It combines stoichiometrically with biotin. The biotin-avidin complex is dependent upon media ionic strength, but relatively stable over a wide pH range and to heat. It is necessary to effect a reversible or irreversible denaturation to free biotin.
AMPA: _ ?-amino-3-hydroxy-5-Methylisoxazole-4-Propionic Acid
Amphipathic molecule: A molecule, having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions. Can apply equally to small molecules, such as phospholipids and macromolecules such as proteins.
Amphiphile: A compound containing a large organic cation or anion which possesses a long unbranched hydrocarbon chain. The existence of distinct polar (hydrophilic) and non-polar (hydrophobic) regions in the molecule promotes the formation of micelles.
AFM: =Atomic force microscope.
