Broadband Communications and Home Networking

The cost of using satellites is determined by the type of transmission, type of signals sent, and the length of time of transmission. Transmission types include preassigned, demand assigned, or occasional. The preassigned transmission type is the most costly, since it ties up an entire multiple access slot for all of the time. The occasional type is the least costly because it is only billed for the time that it is used.
Voice, video, or data are sent using the satellite link. Many systems, the Internet, for example, do not include voice as an option. For more information on the cost of use of the satellites and detailed charges refer to the Intelsat tariff handbook.
