Abhesion
The condition of having minimal adhesion
Acid rain
Acidification of rainfalls caused by certain pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, which may damage vegetation and the aquatic life in fresh water
Accelerated weathering
A test, often using a proprietary "QUV-A" or other Weatherometer whereby the effect of UV radiation and moisture on a coating can be assessed.
Adhesion
A measure of the strength of interaction between two bodies in intimate contact.
Adipic acid
Hexanedioic acid
Alkyd
A coating polyester bearing pendent fatty acid residues
Alkylidenemalonate
1,1 -dicarboalkoxyalkene
Amine Bloom
Deposits of amine bicarbonate/carbamate that appear on certain amine-epoxy coatings on exposure to the atmosphere
Anthropogenic releases
Emission of pollutants resulting from human activities, as distinct from natural emissions, e.g. from trees
Anti-thixotropic behaviour
A slow reduction over time, of the consistency imparted to a sample by shearing
Apparent viscosity
The shear stress divided by the shear rate. It is not a constant coefficient
Arrhenius' Law
An equation describing the temperature dependence of the rate constant for elementary chemical reactions
Associative Thickener
A polymeric material used for thickening waterborne coatings. It creates microstructural domains by associating with itself and colloidal material.
Autooxidation (auto-oxidation, autooxidation)
A process in which organic materials react with atmospheric oxygen to produce free radicals. Consequent cure or degradation (or both) result.
Azeotrope
A liquid mixture of two or more substances where the vapour has the same composition as the liquid
