Appendix I: Units, Abbreviations, Conversion Factors & Glossary
UNITS
S.I. (Syst me International) units are the recommended system replacing the Imperial system, which is however still entrenched in the oil industry.
ABBREVIATIONS
b = barrel (US) = 159 litres = 42 US gals (Also B) boe = barrel of oil equivalent (see below for conversion) cf = cubic feet = 0.0283 m 3
Ma = million years
toe = ton of oil equivalent
Giant oilfield = >500 Mb initial reserves
k (kilo) = 10 3 = thousand (Also M)
M (mega) = 10 6 = million
(Also MM and m)
G (giga) = 10 9 = billion (US) (Also MMM, B, bn) T (tera) = 10 12 = trillion (US)
