S.I. (Syst me International) units are the recommended system replacing the Imperial system, which is however still entrenched in the oil industry.

ABBREVIATIONS

b = barrel (US) = 159 litres = 42 US gals (Also B) boe = barrel of oil equivalent (see below for conversion) cf = cubic feet = 0.0283 m 3

Ma = million years

toe = ton of oil equivalent

Giant oilfield = >500 Mb initial reserves

k (kilo) = 10 3 = thousand (Also M)

M (mega) = 10 6 = million

(Also MM and m)

G (giga) = 10 9 = billion (US) (Also MMM, B, bn) T (tera) = 10 12 = trillion (US)
