ABSTRACT

This paper covers the author's experience with the applications, service, and maintenance of water-source heat pumps and the associated devices for a complete system.

Special emphasis is placed on maintaining customer or tenant satisfaction the key for an owner to realize maximum return on investment.

This experience is based on the use of such systems in over 10 million square feet of commercial office space, totaling approximately 35 thousand tons of refrigeration.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY AND VENTILATION

There has been considerable discussion on the topic of indoor air quality (IAQ), which was rarely discussed until the mid-1970s. At that time, efforts to save energy included reducing the amounts of outdoor air. Ninety percent of tenant complaints of feeling sick and dizzy or about a stuffy atmosphere and unpleasant odors are directly related to lack of ventilation air.

With changes in indoor air quality provisions in the new codes, most of these building problems should disappear. However, there are certain clues to watch for in trying to resolve the complaints. Before expensive measuring tests are performed, an inspection of the space will reveal a lot. Buildings are much tighter now and do not breathe.
