1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The design team of Foster & Partners, and MBT Architecture has created an educational laboratory facility of three stories, in three wings surrounding a teardrop shaped courtyard, with assembly and dining facilities provided as well as a partial basement under two wings. The primarily glass exterior walls combined with the open courtyard create an inviting facility to observe collaborative scientific work in progress.

Three separate wings (West, South, and East) surround a teardrop shaped interior courtyard. Each wing structure is constructed of Type-1 Fire Resistive materials and stands three stories in height with a partial basement under the West and South wings. The Clark Center is approximately 17,521 m 2 (188,600 ft 2) in total area and is classified as an H8 and B occupancy.

Exterior exit balconies run along the entire perimeter of each wing on the 2 nd and 3 rd floors which lead building occupants to eight exit stairways, two of which discharge occupants into the courtyard. At two locations on the 2 nd and 3 rd floors, the balconies extend from the West wing to the East wing, serving as pedestrian walkways

The courtyard exterior walls include double-pane glass windows. Decorative landscaping that includes various types of trees provide shade for building occupants and for students and visitors in the courtyard.

Each wing will have chemistry laboratories that store various types of flammable and combustible liquids and solids in two equal size laboratories per floor separated by...
