Fast Track to Waste-Free Manufacturing: Straight Talk from a Plant Manager

Chapter 5: Examining the WFM Drivers

Overview

In examining the WFM drivers it is important to reiterate the major difference between waste-free manufacturing's approach and all the other world class manufacturing systems. By making a significant change (changing the rules) to the guiding principles of TPS (JIT manufacturing), WFM provides companies with a way to rapidly deploy and implement a waste-free process or at the least a much accelerated implementation process. U.S. manufacturing must realize that following the same structured path of Japan's companies, and more specifically Toyota, in pursuit of JIT manufacturing will simply leave us treading in the dust of those who have gone before. We need to do much more than catch up with the leading world competition; we need to pass them by. And as I've repeatedly said, this is something that WFM gives you the potential of doing.

How do I know this? Because I personally led the extremely successful turnaround of three separate manufacturing facilities, using the approach outlined in this book. However, you might be interested in knowing how I formed my strong conclusions about changing the JIT rules and creating the four new drivers. Let's return to our ongoing story and find out a little more.
