Chapter 9: Organizational and Operational Issues to Support WFM
Essential to the task and a rewarding challenge of deploying WFM is understanding what changes you need to make to the organization that supports launching the compressed production system. Unfortunately, this cannot happen without some discomfort to some people in the organization. The motives and intent of the plant manager will be seriously questioned, if not actively challenged, by those who lack an understanding of the kind of radical change that must occur. And as the process evolves, communication will be critical to your success. But even then there is no guarantee that buy-in is going to come close to a level of universal acceptance.
Launching the Compressed Production System
Launching the compressed production system may well be the toughest job for the plant manager leading such change and one I wish I had all the answers for. Unfortunately, I do not, but I can share some personal experiences and certainly point out a number of key considerations for this extremely delicate task. It starts by understanding that a number of traditional manufacturing functions (departments) have no place in the compressed production system. Two of the more common functions in traditional manufacturing organizations, which do not fit into a long-term WFM strategy, are the production control functions and the quality control functions.
